This is potentially a very rare, unfinished version of "Bremen 4: Angels In Hell," an Osamu Tezuka-produced, -written, -directed, and -designed television special aired in 1981 as a part of Nippon Television's "24-Hour Television: Love Saves the Earth" telethon event. The infamous story goes that the animation for this special was so unfinished before it aired that amateur animators were even called in last second to assist, but it was not enough to save the production; it aired virtually unfinished, and later on, over a third of the special was completely redone for its home video release, the original broadcast version never to be seen again... Perhaps until now.
We have tracked down and acquired this very rare 35mm film print containing what we believe may, in fact, be the original broadcast version of the special as it aired, which to our knowledge has never been properly preserved in any form until now. There exist no screenshots, no captures, nor any other example of what the original broadcast actually looked like, but comparing the print to the available home video version of the special (which has even been remastered in HD), there are substantial differences in animation quality, and even pacing and editing. It cannot be fully verified, but this may either be the original broadcast version, or an alternate cut created for Asian markets outside of Japan, but in any case, much of that unfinished animation is here in its full glory.
There was not much information as to the origin of the print, but it is dubbed in Mandarin and includes burned-in Mandarin and English subtitles. In addition to this, companies from Hong Kong and Taiwan who were involved in this project, the main of which was Tai-Wei Animation Co., Ltd., which was apparently known to have collaborated with Tezuka Productions before to bring animation over to Taiwan, are all credited on the film, so perhaps either Taiwan or Hong Kong is where the film came from. We have scanned it and preserved it in 4K, and while there was too much damage to reasonably fix, some minor color correction and audio fixes were applied courtesy of Quazza and Jefferson Taylor.
As mentioned, this version of the special has never been preserved by anyone and has never been rediscovered since its original Asian theatrical release until now, since there exists no other footage or capture of the original broadcast, to our knowledge, and not much information about it even exists in the first place. It cannot be 100% verified on account of this general lack of information, but it is safe to say this may be that rumored, unfinished version that first aired in 1981 before much of it was corrected for video. If not, it certainly contains much of the unfinished animation, at least.
